In a dazzling reminder of Florida’s rich maritime history, a team of shipwreck excavators has uncovered more than 1,000 gold and silver coins worth an estimated $1 million from the remains of a centuries-old Spanish fleet. The discovery was made this summer off Florida’s Atlantic coast, along the stretch famously known as the “Treasure Coast.”

The coins—minted in Spanish colonies such as Bolivia, Mexico, and Peru—were part of the legendary 1715 Treasure Fleet. This fleet, laden with riches from the New World, was en route to Spain when a hurricane struck on July 31, 1715, sinking 11 ships and scattering their cargo across the seafloor. Historians estimate that up to $400 million in treasure was lost in the disaster.

The latest find was announced by 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels LLC, the salvage company with exclusive rights to the wreck site. Among the recovered artifacts were silver “Reales” and gold “Escudos,” many of which still bear visible dates and mint marks—valuable details for historians and collectors alike.
“This discovery is not only about the treasure itself, but the stories it tells,” said Sal Guttuso, Director of Operations for Queens Jewels. “Each coin is a piece of history, a tangible link to the people who lived, worked, and sailed during the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire. Finding 1,000 of them in a single recovery is both rare and extraordinary”.

Under Florida law, any historic artifacts found in state waters are considered state property. Salvage companies like Queens Jewels operate under permits that allow them to recover such treasures, with approximately 20% of the finds retained by the state for research and public display.
The remaining artifacts are split between the company and its subcontractors, following a federal court-approved process. Select pieces from this summer’s haul are expected to be conserved and exhibited in local museums, offering the public a chance to connect with Florida’s maritime legacy.
