Redwire Corporation, a Floridian company, has developed and is deploying the most powerful solar panels ever constructed, known as Roll-Out Solar Arrays (ROSA). These cutting-edge panels are designed to provide power to NASA's Lunar Gateway, a pivotal component of the Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon.

Each ROSA array boasts an unprecedented capacity of 60 kilowatts for space applications, demonstrating remarkable efficiency with 40 kilowatts per cubic meter of stored power and an impressive power-to-mass ratio of up to 120 W/kg. What sets these panels apart from conventional systems is their innovative deployment mechanism: they extend without the need for motors, utilizing composite booms that release deformation energy to unfurl the panels. This design makes them exceptionally lightweight, reliable, and compact, rendering them ideal for extended space missions.

Despite the significant technological advancements they represent, the Gateway program has faced political and budgetary challenges, having narrowly escaped cancellation due to a recent Senate vote. Nevertheless, Redwire is on track to deliver these advanced solar panels to Maxar, the company responsible for the station's power and propulsion element, by the close of 2025.

This project also stands as a testament to international collaboration, with over 60% of its funding originating from foreign partners. This not only alleviates the financial burden on American taxpayers but also establishes a potential new precedent for future large-scale space endeavors. Mike Gold of Redwire underscores the critical importance of gaining experience with large spacecraft operating in lunar orbit as an essential step toward future missions to Mars.
