Builders Unearth €9 Million Gold Stash Sealed in Walls of Belgian Property

A routine construction project in the Belgian town of Dendermonde has turned into a historic discovery. Builders renovating a cellar at a property owned by the social charity CAW Oost-Vlaanderen stumbled upon a hidden safe bricked into the walls, containing a massive hoard of gold bars and coins estimated to be worth approximately €9 million.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Find

The discovery was made on August 11, 2026, while workers were drilling to lay new sewage pipes. The team, which included an 18-year-old summer student named Kobe, initially thought the find might be simple coins before realizing the magnitude of the treasure—which included over 4,000 coins and 50 numbered gold bars. Demonstrating remarkable integrity, the builders immediately notified their client and the police rather than attempting to conceal the haul.

The gold has been transferred to a high-security government facility in Brussels while authorities investigate its origin and potential criminal links. Under Belgian law, if no rightful owner claims the hoard within five years, the discovery may become subject to civil laws regarding found treasure.

For the charity CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, the news has sparked hopes that, should they be permitted to keep the windfall, the funds could significantly expand their vital support services for the homeless in East Flanders.
