Japan’s New Prime Minister Is a Heavy Metal Drummer — Meet Sanae Takaichi

In a historic and unexpected turn of events, Japan has elected its first female Prime Minister — and she’s not your typical politician. Meet Sanae Takaichi: a seasoned lawmaker, a conservative firebrand, and, perhaps most surprisingly, a lifelong heavy metal enthusiast and drummer.

From Parliament to Power Chords

Sanae Takaichi, 64, assumed office in October 2025 as the leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, succeeding former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Her election marks a significant milestone in Japan’s political history, breaking a long-standing gender barrier in the country’s highest office.

But beyond her political credentials, Takaichi has captured global attention for her unconventional personal passions. A self-proclaimed fan of British heavy metal legends like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple, she’s been dubbed Japan’s new “Iron Lady” — a nod both to her admiration for Margaret Thatcher and her love of metal.

A Life in Rhythm

Takaichi’s musical journey began in her youth, when she first picked up the drumsticks. She played in a metal band during her college years and continues to drum to this day — often late at night, after her husband has gone to sleep. In a recent interview, she revealed that playing on her electronic drum kit helps her relieve stress, especially while caring for her husband, Taku Yamamoto, a former politician who has faced serious health challenges in recent years.

Her passion for music isn’t just a private hobby. Just before the election, Takaichi appeared on a podcast with members of the Japanese metal-pop group BABYMETAL, where she shared stories of her musical upbringing and her enduring love for the genre.

A New Era for Japan

Takaichi’s rise to power signals a shift in Japan’s political landscape — not only in terms of gender representation but also in the cultural image of leadership. Her blend of conservative politics and rock-and-roll spirit challenges traditional expectations and offers a more multifaceted view of what it means to lead.

Whether she’s behind a podium or a drum kit, one thing is clear: Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi marches to the beat of her own drum.
