Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm of 2025, barrels toward Jamaica with catastrophic force

Hurricane Melissa has officially become the most powerful storm on Earth in 2025, and it's now bearing down on Jamaica with devastating intensity. As a Category 5 hurricane packing sustained winds of 175 mph (282 km/h), Melissa is forecast to be the strongest storm to hit Jamaica since Hurricane Gilbert in 1988.

🌪️ A Historic Threat to Jamaica

Melissa intensified rapidly over the Caribbean Sea, reaching Category 5 status on Monday. The National Hurricane Center warns of life-threatening conditions, including:

  • Storm surge capable of submerging coastal areas
  • Rainfall up to 40 inches, triggering flash floods and landslides
  • Winds strong enough to cause total structural failure in poorly built homes

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has urged all residents to shelter in place, calling the storm “the worst in the island’s history”. Tourists and locals alike are bracing for impact, with landfall expected early Tuesday morning near St Elizabeth Parish, and exit near St Ann Parish.

🌍 Global Significance

Melissa’s wind speeds and pressure readings make it the strongest storm globally this year, surpassing all other tropical systems in intensity. Meteorologists note that such rapid intensification and sustained strength are rare, even among Category 5 hurricanes.

🆘 Early Casualties and Damage

As of Tuesday morning, three people have died and 13 have been injured during storm preparations in Jamaica. Power outages and infrastructure damage are already being reported, even before full landfall.

📡 Tracking and Updates

Melissa is expected to maintain hurricane strength as it moves across southeastern Cuba and the Bahamas later this week. Emergency services across the region are on high alert.
