Coho Salmon Season Opens on Icicle River: What Anglers Need to Know

Starting November 1st, the Icicle River in Washington State officially opens for coho salmon retention, offering sport anglers a chance to fish for the prized “silver” salmon through the end of the month.

🎣 Key Details for the 2025 Coho Season

According to the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), coho fishing is permitted from November 1 to November 30 in designated stretches of the Icicle River:

  • From 800 feet upstream of the river’s mouth to 500 feet downstream of the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Barrier Dam
  • From shoreline markers at the intersection of Cyo Road and the Icicle River near Sleeping Lady Resort to the Icicle Peshastin Irrigation Footbridge

📏 Regulations and Limits

To ensure sustainable harvest and protect fish populations, WDFW has outlined the following rules:

  • Minimum size: Coho must be at least 12 inches to retain.
  • Daily limit: Two coho salmon per angler.
  • Gear restrictions: Barbed hooks are allowed, but fishing with bait is prohibited.
  • No night fishing: All fishing must occur during daylight hours.

These regulations are designed to balance recreational fishing opportunities with conservation efforts, as coho returns to the Icicle River are expected to be strong enough to support harvest this season.

🐟 Why It Matters

The Icicle River is a popular destination for fall fishing, and the coho season offers a unique chance to enjoy the outdoors while targeting one of the Pacific Northwest’s most iconic salmon species. With scenic views and accessible fishing zones, it’s a prime spot for both seasoned anglers and newcomers.

📍 Plan Your Trip

Whether you're local or visiting Leavenworth, be sure to check WDFW’s official guidelines before heading out. Respecting boundaries and following posted signs ensures a safe and legal fishing experience for everyone.
