New Study Program in Poland: University of Warsaw Launches "Archaeology of War"

Warsaw, Poland – The University of Warsaw is introducing a pioneering educational initiative by launching Poland's first postgraduate program in "Archaeology of War." This interdisciplinary course, offered by the Faculty of Archaeology, aims to explore the history of armed conflicts from prehistoric times to the present day, analyzing them through the lens of archaeological discoveries.

The studies, which will commence on October 1, 2025, will last for one year and comprise 150 hours of didactic and practical classes, including lectures, exercises, and workshops. Although elements of war archaeology have previously appeared at various Polish universities, this marks the first time the subject is being taught as a distinct and comprehensive program.

The curriculum is exceptionally broad and covers topics such as:

  • Weaponry Studies: Examining the history and evolution of weapons.

  • Art of Fortification: Analyzing defensive structures and their strategic importance.

  • Combat Tactics and Strategy: Understanding ancient methods of warfare.

  • Archaeology of Violence and Terror: Investigating the material traces of conflicts and their impact on societies.

  • Anthropology of Conflicts: Analyzing the socio-psychological aspects of wars.

  • Archaeology of Battlefields and Extermination Sites: Studying the remains of armed clashes and tragic events.

  • History of Naval Warfare and Siegecraft: Specialized topics concerning conflicts at sea and sieges.

The studies are part-time (extramural) and are open not only to archaeology graduates. Anyone holding a bachelor's, engineer's (or equivalent), or master's degree can apply, regardless of their previous field of study. Upon successful completion of all subjects and obtaining a final grade, graduates will receive a postgraduate diploma.

Most theoretical classes will take place at the Faculty of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw, located at ul. Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28 in Warsaw. The program was developed with the support of many national specialists, including experts from the Polish Army Museum.

Professor Bartosz Kontny, the Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw, enthusiastically encourages enrollment, emphasizing the unique nature of the studies. "Nowhere online will you find the opportunity to converse with enthusiasts and specialists in ancient warfare, as will be possible here. And nowhere else will you be able to touch artifacts that are hundreds or thousands of years old," says Professor Kontny, highlighting the practical and interactive dimension of the new program.

These studies offer an exceptional opportunity for all enthusiasts of history, military science, and archaeology to deepen their knowledge and skills in a dynamically developing field of research on the impact of conflicts on civilization.
