NASA, in collaboration with the Alaska Satellite Facility, has launched a groundbreaking online portal and dataset known as the North America Surface Displacement Product Suite. This innovative, ready-to-use dataset provides comprehensive details on land motion across North America, with measurements extending back to 2016.
The portal offers users the ability to quickly view these crucial measurements at local, state, and regional scales, a process that would typically consume days or more if not utilizing this specialized dataset and website.
Spearheaded by NASA's Observational Products for End-Users from Remote Sensing Analysis (OPERA) project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the dataset leverages measurements from spaceborne synthetic aperture radars (SARs). These advanced instruments generate high-resolution data illustrating how Earth's surface is moving.
Currently, the portal includes measurements for millions of pixels across the U.S. Southwest, northern Mexico, and the New York metropolitan region. There are ambitious plans to expand coverage to the rest of the United States, Central America, and Canada within 120 miles of the U.S. border by the end of 2025.
A key feature of the tool is its ability to visualize cumulative land surface movement over time. When a user selects a specific pixel, the system efficiently gathers measurements from hundreds of files to generate a graph. This capability is instrumental in identifying and understanding potential threats to end-users, while simultaneously offering significant cost and time savings for various agencies.
